Don't join a gym this January!

January is just around the corner and with that comes New Year’s Resolutions and joining a gym.

I’ve always trained in commercial gyms. I’ve worked in and had memberships in high end luxury gyms, budget chains gym and raw, old school style gyms. I’ve always enjoyed the atmosphere and camaraderie in gyms.

But then in March 2020, gyms were no longer an option and so I started working out at home. At the time I was living in an apartment in New York and space was a premium, so my workouts were based on bodyweight and resistance bands exercises and this served me well.

I then moved out of the city to a house with a garage and started putting my own gym together. I now do the majority of my workouts at home. There’s a lot of advantages to a home gym, and also some drawbacks. But overall, I think a home gym is the best option. Here’s why.

Time:

  • There is always some sort of commuting time just to get to the gym.

  • No waiting for equipment.

  • If you don’t have time for full workout you can get a set of pull ups or squats done in 5 / 10 minutes. These micro-workouts are a great benefit to a home workout space.

No distractions:

  • When you’re training at home you won’t have other people distracting you. You can focus on your own workout. With the gym set up the way you like it with music that gets you going you will work out with a new intensity.

Avoid inconveniences:

  • Awful music

  • Busy gym

  • TV screens showing depressing news

Example to Your Kids:

  • Your kids will see your workout habits and will be curious.

  • Kids copy.

Save money:

  • Depending on your level, you can start with minimum investment. Resistance bands or a couple of dumbbells.

  • A decent home gym will last for decades.

One thing I do recommend when working out at home is to have a dedicated exercise space. Maybe it’s the garage, spare bedroom, basement or just moving living room furniture around a little to create a space. Stepping into a workout space helps create the right mindset needed for a good workout.

If you’re thinking of joining my 6-week course, you will not need any gym membership or equipment. Resistance bands or a few dumbbells are helpful but not required, all you need is a small workout space within your home.
