Don't overlook vital nutrients

Most of the time when we think of food, we think of calories. However, food is needed to provide nutrients, not just energy. We should be putting our health first, focusing on nutrient-dense foods and giving our body the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Here’s a shortlist of just some of the nutrients and the benefits provided from a steak:

  • Vitamin B12: Plays a vital role in our nervous system and cognitive function. B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue, memory loss, and neurological problems.

  • Choline: Officially recognized as an essential nutrient since 1998. It has a variety of functions in the body including metabolism and proper liver function.

  • Carnitine: an important amino acid needed to convert fatty acids into energy. Very beneficial for weight loss.

  • Zinc: An essential mineral that is a vital part of many functions. It has anti-inflammatory effects, helps heal wounds, and protects against UV radiation.

  • Magnesium: Plays several important roles in the health of your body and brain. It helps fight depression, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

A protein shake or protein bar will never compare to natural sources of protein. Animal sources and primarily beef from grass-fed cattle exposed to direct sunlight are filled with copious amounts of nutrients, many of which are needed for us to function at our best.

I’m off to eat a steak!
