Don’t be a hopper!

Are you a program hopper who changes from one program to another in search of a non-existent magical workout?

You may have heard statements like:
• Keep changing your routine for it to be effective.
• Change keeps your muscles guessing.
• Don’t let your body get used to the workout.
• Shock your muscles with different exercises frequently.
• Muscle confusion workouts boost results.

Does any of this sound familiar? Well, for the most part, it’s a load of rubbish.

There are some legitimate reasons for making changes to your workout.
• Better suited exercise due to injury or poor technique.
• You achieved your goals.
• New equipment available.

However, the idea of constantly making changes is nonsense and it can prevent you from making progress and achieving your goals.

The main reason is progressive overload. This means you need to gradually increase the demands being placed on your body. For this to occur you need consistency of exercise and you need to track your progress over a sufficient duration of time.

You are not going to progress at anything if you’re constantly changing it. It would be like taking a new job in a different industry every few months while trying to develop a career in one.

Progression is the only ‘change’ your body truly requires and that’s going to entail sticking with the same program for a lot longer than you may realize.
